History
A
group of doctors working in the Neonatal department of Sion hospital
realized that of the thousands of babies that they treated at
the hospital, some died and those who recovered and went home,
many of them developed handicaps. Rearing and caring of these
handicapped children is a hard-hitting task for slum dwellers.
These deaths, diseases and handicaps could be prevented if the
mother is properly cared for during her pregnancy and if she receives
quality healthcare at delivery. Not only is proper healthcare
needed at the time of pregnancy, however, a woman's entire life
cycle from birth, including social and health situations, will
have an impact on the outcome of her newborn's life.
Therefore, the team of doctors decided to visit slums and organize
awareness campaigns for women in the slums, once a week. The team
felt enthusiastic while working with slum dwellers. The time they
spent with women in the community, inspired them to devote more
time to community service.
When one of the founder trustees offered an endowment to initiate
further work in the slums, SNEHA was founded.
SNEHA is managed by a dedicated team of professionals with medical
expertise and varied experience in public and private organizations,
hospitals and international NGOs.
