Date of Inception: December 2006

Status: Ongoing (phase I completed)

Target Group: Women with children under the age of 3 years

Project Area: Mumbai G/North Ward – Kumbharwada and Kunchikurve clusters

  • Kumbharwada: 2215 households, population of 9452, 81women divided into 6 groups
  • Kunchikorve: 750 households, population of 2000, 75 women divided into 6 groups

Goal: To decrease malnutrition in children in the age group 0-3 years and to improve the infant and young child feeding practices of the mothers in urban slum communities.

Objective: To work with women’s groups to improve the knowledge and feeding practices followed by mothers in Kumbharwada and Kunchikurve.

Methodology:

Step I: To determine the current knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of women towards child nutrition in the community

Step II: To form women's groups for women with children below the age of 3 years and increase their knowledge about appropriate breastfeeding and complementary feeding

Step III: To prepare a training module containing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material for imparting knowledge regarding Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Practices to the women's group

Step IV: To evaluate the impact of the training sessions on the KAP of the women

Nutrition Day Care Centers

Kunchikorve Day care centre: November 2008
Kumbharwada Day care centre: February 2009

Status: Ongoing

Target Group: 0-3 year old undernourished children

Project Area: Kunchikorve and Kumbharwada areas of Dharavi

Goal: To reduce undernutrition in Kunchikorve and Kumbharwada areas of Dharavi in the 0-3 year old age group

Objectives:

  1. Early identification of malnourished children in the age group of 0-3 years in Kumbhawada & Kunhikurve nagar
  2. To manage cases of undernutrition with Grade I & II in children in the age group of 0-3years
  3. To prevent the undernutrition in the age group of 0-3years
  4. To refer Grade III & IV undernourished cases to the nutrition rehab center at the Urban health center

Methodology:

  • Service: establishing 2 day care centers in existing Anganwadi centers to manage cases of under nutrition through 4 nutritious meals and snacks a day and weight gain monitoring
  • Behavior change: counseling of mothers and care givers during monthly parents’ meetings in feeding and care seeking practices
  • Referral: cases of malnourished children are referred from other Anganwadi centers and severe cases are referred to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre based at the Urban Health Centre, Dharavi

Project Area: Slum communities from the Shastri Nagar and Gazdar Bandh areas

Goal & Objective: To identify children with congenital heart disease and provide necessary medical intervention

Methodology:

  • Screening of slum children for congenital heart disease

  • Facilitate surgical intervention for children identified with congenital heart disease
