Our Work

We partner with government systems and civil society organisations to address the social determinants of health and ensure adequate coverage of social protection for our target populations.

The Social Protection Project works with communities to facilitate their access to quality food grains through the Public Distribution System (PDS). Along with efforts to improve community awareness and access to their food security rights, we collaborate throughout the official levels of the department of Food and Civil Supplies to address roadblocks in the delivery of services.

Increased access to cash transfer benefits for maternal and child health

We strengthen organisational interventions to promote maternal and child health with our focus on facilitating access to cash transfer schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) and Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) related to maternity benefits and child care benefits.

Enhanced support to improve livelihood opportunities or enable economic empowerment

Apart from facilitating the uptake of universal health coverage schemes like the Ayushman Bharat and the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), the domain supports with schemes like the Niradhar Yojana and postal insurance schemes..

Improved access to educational support schemes and psychosocial and legal assistance

The domain, in collaboration with the PVWC program continues to assist with access to the Manodhairya Yojana (for survivors of sexual violence) through partnership with the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), it has initiated work for referral on educational scholarships for young people.

Education enables collective action to fight injustice!

When we enable people with appropriate information, it results in a shift of power. A community which is aware of its rights can take collective action and demand for quality services for the larger good of the society.

The ration shop at T Junction, Dharavi would stay shut for most of the time. Cardholders were refused ration under the pretext of inadequate supplies and the quality of food grains provided was extremely poor. The exasperated residents did not know a way out of this situation, till some of them attended a talk about the Public Distribution System (PDS) organised by SNEHA teams.

"After listening to them we realised that getting quality ration on time was our right”, said a resident. “We came to know how and where to make a complaint if we had a grievance."

They filed a complaint and followed it up persistently, and as a result, “The shop is now locked. The shop owner’s license was cancelled; he is in jail. All the card holders drawing ration from the shop have been reallocated to two other ration shops in the community. The shop owner has finally got what he deserved!” report the victorious community members.
