The "Beyond Boundaries" project, implemented by SNEHA, aimed to enhance maternal and newborn health across three municipal corporations in Mumbai from 2012 to 2016. The project adopted a two-fold approach, improving public health infrastructure and encouraging vulnerable communities to adopt better health-seeking behaviors. The interventions included establishing maternity referral linkages, conducting health awareness campaigns, and engaging community health workers to visit households and educate pregnant and lactating mothers.
The end-line survey, which compared data from before and after the intervention, demonstrated significant improvements. Early registration for antenatal care, institutional deliveries, and postnatal health-seeking behaviors increased. Exclusive breastfeeding rates also rose, reflecting better community awareness and engagement. However, challenges like misconceptions about immunization and gaps in healthcare infrastructure persisted.
The project underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between public health systems and community initiatives. It highlighted the potential of targeted interventions in reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in urban informal settlements while suggesting continued focus on systemic and structural improvements to sustain progress.
