The Community Needs Assessment Survey conducted by SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action) in Mumbai and Thane during May-June 2020 provides crucial insights into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban poor communities. With 1,567 respondents, mostly women, the survey revealed that while there was high awareness of COVID-19 symptoms and preventive measures, economic hardship overshadowed the health crisis for these communities.

A significant 85% of respondents reported substantial income loss or unemployment due to the lockdown, with 72% expressing concern about ongoing financial instability. Food insecurity was prevalent, with 14% of respondents missing meals in the two months prior due to a lack of resources. Despite receiving food rations from India's Public Distribution System and NGOs, many households lacked emergency supplies.

The survey highlighted gaps in knowledge about COVID-19, such as the action to take if infected and awareness of high-risk groups. Most respondents were well-informed through television but had limited awareness of government services like testing and quarantine facilities.

Public trust in government institutions was strong, particularly in the police and public health systems. However, nearly half of the respondents believed the pandemic restrictions were too severe, although the majority supported government measures like isolation and quarantine.

Overall, the survey underscores the urgent need for additional support to address economic insecurity and ensure food and income stability for vulnerable communities. Enhanced communication about government resources and helplines is also essential as the pandemic continues to affect these populations.
