Distribution of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables in Dharavi, India – lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic

Details the food relief efforts led by SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action) and ATE Chandra Foundation during the COVID-19 lockdown in Dharavi, one of the largest slums in India. The initiative took place between April and June 2020, amidst the severe restrictions of the nationwide lockdown that limited access to essential supplies.
The lockdown, implemented to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, significantly impacted the availability of fresh produce, particularly in containment zones like Dharavi. To address the resultant food insecurity, SNEHA and ATE Chandra Foundation distributed 30,000 boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables (FFVG) to the most vulnerable residents in Dharavi.
This effort aimed not only to provide essential nutrients but also to boost the immunity of the population during the pandemic.
